Christie Owen and Brandi Downham offer a collection of works immersed in the language of unity and balance. Drawing on their individual processes, each artist will present work that evokes a visceral sense of steady wakefulness. Extracting from their own intuition, and inspired by the flourish of spring, “Awake” serves as a metaphor for both a season and a journey.

I am super excited to be one of the artists in ONE: Noche Cubana at Mainsite Contemporary for the Blind Art Auction: An invitational exhibit of works by some of Oklahoma’s most respected visual artists. There will be a party Havana-style to celebrate the culture of Cuba through music, dance, art, food, drink and surprises. ONE raises money to support the operations of the Norman Arts Council. Mainsite is one of my favorite galleries in Oklahoma and I am honored to have been chosen to participate.

Being co-founder and former Vice President of Fringe Art was a both a catalyst and a spring board for me in so many ways. This organization is such a great resource for women artists in Oklahoma! Back in 2011, Christie Hackler and myself started Fringe with “Link” — the premier group show with other women artists.

I recently installed a commission painting for Kristine Bates Interiors in Nichols Hills, Oklahoma. This work is from my “Sugar Mountain” series. The original “Sugar Mountain” painting sold at Wings of Art, an art auction that I co-founded and facilitated, but the concept for this piece was born out of a need to de-stress. My brother was having a serious surgery. I was so worried and nervous. I needed to focus quietly on something. I love the frosting like texture of modeling paste. It is soothing and when mixing colors it reminds me of frosting. I started planting these delicious dobs of paint on a panel and couldn’t stop. It was theraputic. My brother made it through the surgery, my painting was done for the auction and I discovered a new way to use a medium. The name came from a Niel Young song (huge fan!) but I am also a sugar addict. People say it looks “yummy!” I have to agree.
