With each quarterly show at Verbode, the artist has the opportunity to work solo or in a group format to create dynamic and progressive exhibits for the public that reflect the flourishing creativity of the Oklahoma art community.
Christie Owen is the 2016 Urban Core Artist in Residence at Verbode. She has been an artist all her life and graphic designer for over 20 years. From a distance, her art exudes a “less is more” or minimalist aesthetic but with closer investigation the composition, surface textures and layers sensitize the viewer to escape on a visual journey. Inspired by our everyday environments, the materials and compositions in her art work perpetually change in relation to various time and life experiences. Her work captures a journey of experimentation while seeking to convey balance and unity through forms and colors derived by industry and nature. Christie earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Communication Design from State University of New York College at Buffalo.
Oklahoma City artist Matt Goad has been working professionally as a graphic designer and illustrator for over 20 years, and venturing into the realm of paintings on canvas in 2007. Whimsical, geometric, simple and complex, his paintings of animals and nature draw inspiration from classic graphic design and pop art reproduction of the mid 20th century. The discovery of woodcut printing during college was a major turning point in Matt’s development of his illustration style he refers to as “chunkism,” utilizing stencils and acrylics to create a world where nature and geometry meet and have a baby.
Exhibit opens September 15 and closes November 11, 2016.

Christie Owen and Brandi Downham offer a collection of works immersed in the language of unity and balance. Drawing on their individual processes, each artist will present work that evokes a visceral sense of steady wakefulness. Extracting from their own intuition, and inspired by the flourish of spring, “Awake” serves as a metaphor for both a season and a journey.

I am super excited to be one of the artists in ONE: Noche Cubana at Mainsite Contemporary for the Blind Art Auction: An invitational exhibit of works by some of Oklahoma’s most respected visual artists. There will be a party Havana-style to celebrate the culture of Cuba through music, dance, art, food, drink and surprises. ONE raises money to support the operations of the Norman Arts Council.
